The Last Bulldog Report – Farewell

It’s been real. This is it. As the Glassboro Bulldog season ended and the semester coming to an end, this means I am done writing this blog. To be fairly honest, I am surprise how things have turn out doing this blog. I have learned a lot this semester about journalism. I cannot wait to continue covering sports teams after college. Well lets hope – I am forever grateful on covering this exciting team.

I think it is very fun covering a team with low expectations coming into the season to do so well and make the playoffs, just how the Glassboro Bulldogs did. Shoutout to the kids for an impressive season. Covering this team made me realize you can still build a core of young players in high school that are not seniors and can continue with success for years to come. That is what I truly see from this team.

A special shoutout goes out to Coach Hagerty. Although I did not get permission to interview the players, Coach Hagerty was very supportive and helped me out a lot during my interviews. He gave me very good answers and made me comfortable as it was easier to do my job. I wish Coach Hagerty and the Glassboro Bulldogs a great offseason and I look forward to see what they can do next season. I have a good feeling this team can go far with the potential they showed this season!

Covering football was something I was not sure about, but I think I can have a future with it. As always I watch football every Sunday as I support my Colts! It is ironic how both the Colts and Bulldogs surprise people this year. Follow me on Twitter if you want to see my tweets and my retweets. I usually retweet sports memes that will make you laugh. @GiancarloHenao1

Well that is all. Thank you to everybody who viewed my blog this semester. Take care and Happy Holidays!

Preview of the 2019 Glassboro Bulldogs: Can They Make The Next Step?

To me this is an exciting post to do. After a season ends, journalist often post an early preview for the next season. Covering the Bulldogs has been fun. They started off in full rebuild mode going into the season with first year Head Coach Tim Hagerty. With having losing seasons for the last three years, it was expected that the Bulldogs will have another as they look for a fresh start with a new coach, new system, and new culture to the team.

In 2014 the Bulldogs were 8-2 and made the playoffs. Since then the Bulldogs manage to get 10 wins. This season the Bulldogs were able to shock Glassboro fans and make the playoffs. They went an even 5-5 record. With inconsistency as an issue, their record could have been or worse, but an even .500 record and playoff appearance is always a good start to an underdog story.

The Glassboro Bulldogs going into next season are looking to improve their .500 record and look into building a respectable record for a deep playoff push. Although it is very early we can see what the Bulldogs will need to improve looking forward. The Bulldogs will be losing their starting quarterback, clearly one of the most important positions in football. They also will be missing some important pieces on defense, but with mainly the offensive core still intact for another year of Glassboro football, this can very well be the same team that can improve. Players to watch out for: RB Dymeir Still (Junior), WR Greg Brackett and Keon Sabb (Freshman) , LB Tyrell Robinson (Junior). Here are a few photos of these players from this past season and can look forward to playing a key part of this young core for the Glassboro Bulldogs.

Although there is a lot of work to do for this team, in my interviews with Coach Hagerty his goal is to get his boys to the gym this offseason. He wants to build off this years success and take the next step. When looking at my previous blog posts, there are consistency issues for the team. Starting off 3-0 is very promising, but then going 0-3 in their next three games did not help their playoffs hopes. Going 2-1 at the end is a finish to the season, but there is more to do as Coach Hagerty looks to further the game plan each week next year. Hagerty’s goal is to get a home playoff game so the Glassboro crowd can help feed off the team’s energy as the Bulldogs look to get their first playoff win since 2013.

Through this season Tim Hagerty has been a leader for his boys. Going 5-5 in his first year many did not expect them to make the playoffs was an impressive accomplishment. The underdog story is just starting as the team looks forward to next season making that push.

A Video Interview With Tim Hagerty

First year Head Coach Tim Hagerty has led the Glassboro Bulldogs back to the winning track this season. Not many expect the Bulldogs to go back to the playoffs after having a losing record the past few seasons, but Hagerty, a Glassboro native has his group of varsity players on the right track. After starting the season 3-0, they hit a snag ending the season 2-5. The Bulldogs ended up going to an even 5-5 record where they made a surprise playoff appearance. In this video interview Coach Hagerty talks about the season in review and what his plans are for his team as they prepare for offseason workouts in a few weeks. Coach Hagerty stresses the goal for improvement as the Bulldogs head to the right direction after a sudden turnaround.

Year In Review: Glassboro Bulldogs

Bulldogs

Overview
The 2018 season was mark as a fresh start for the Glassboro Bulldogs. Under first year Head Coach Tim Hagerty, the Bulldogs started their rebuilt with a playoff appearance. To say the Bulldogs season was a failure is an overstatement. A good start by making the playoffs can create a movement of success for Glassboro under Head Coach Tim Hagerty.
Season Review
The young Bulldogs were able to start hot with a perfect 3-0 record. After that they had their bye week, that is where they struggled to win a game. They lost three straight games to make their record an even at 3-3 in mid-October. With just needing to win one game to clinch a playoff spot the young Bulldogs were able to do that as they won their last regular season vs Woodstown 14-13. That gave the Bulldogs their first playoff appearance since 2014. They went on to lose 35-12 to Buena. With their playoff loss, all they had left was the consolation bracket where they won their game vs Maple Shade.
Through The Numbers
The season may not be over yet for the Bulldogs as they have their annual Thanksgiving game vs Deptford, but their numbers thus far are intriguing. Some can be improved, but overall there is hope for the Glassboro Bulldogs.
Season Team Stats :
Glassboro’s Point Average : 17.3 points
Glassboro’s Opponents Point Average : 24.1 points
Total TDs: 21
Team Sacks: 16.0
Team Interceptions: 7
Passing Yards per Game: 81.2
Rushing Yards per Game: 133.2
Split Stats:
During win streak 3-0:
Glassboro’s Point Average : 28 points
Glassboro’s Opponents Point Average: 16
During losing streak 0-3:
Glassboro’s Point Average : 6 points
Glassboro’s Opponents Point Average: 36 points
Last three games (2-1) :
Glassboro’s Point Average: 20 points
Glassboro’s Opponents Point Average: 20.3 points
The Bulldogs do have one last game vs Deptford on Thanksgiving morning at ten a.m. They look to finish over .500. Either way the stats show inconsistency, however there is a competitive team in there. The future will tell what the Bulldogs will learn, either way it seems like they are heading to the right direction.

I have conducted another interview with Glassboro Bulldogs’ Head Coach Tim Hagerty. It is crucial to hear from Coach Hagerty as the Bulldogs’ hopes for a championship season came to an end last weekend. Coach Hagerty discusses the game plan versus Maple Shade. Coach then discusses the plans for the team for their two final games of the season and the message to his team. I ask him what was his best accomplishment throughout the season. Also he talks about what he expects from his team next year and what adjustments he can make as Head Coach. The goals he wants is for the Bulldogs to finish the year out strong, especially for their seniors.

The Bulldogs are a young and upcoming team coached by Tim Hagerty. After his first year as head coach, they got to the playoffs only to lose in the first round. The future is looking bright and Glassboro will look to improve next season. Find out more with my audio interview with Coach Tim Hagerty.

Glassboro end up winning their game vs. Maple Shade improving to 5-4. The Bulldogs will wrap up their 2018 season at home vs Deptford on Thanksgiving day at ten am. This is only the beginning for the Bulldogs as the Hagerty era is underway.

This time was different, however when the Bulldogs’ defense made a big stop to clinch the game. The Bulldogs won the game 14-13 in a nail bitter.

Q&A W/ Coach Hagerty

IMG_0317

Tim Hagerty

Last week I had the pleasure to interview Glassboro High School’s Varsity Football Coach Tim Hagerty. Hagerty was able to talk about his new experiences as head coach, how the Bull Dogs can bounce back from their loss to Salem and what he can expect from his team for the rest of the season.

Q: How has it been as a first year head coach?

A: So far it’s been good. I graduated from Glassboro, so actually getting the opportunity to come back in this position is always a goal of mine. These kids I’ve known them since they have been in 7th grade, being a middle school teacher. It has been awesome so far, getting a chance to work with them. We have been off to a pretty good start.

Q: What is something you stress to your team every game?

A: Week by Week we have 2-3 different goals. It is very rarely any individual goal. Like last week it was zero substitution penalties, zero points at half, and zero turnovers so we take accountability for mistakes we’ve made.

Coach Hagerty drawing up a play

Q: What do you think will need to happen for the Bull Dogs to make the playoffs this year?

A: There is a no seeding that came out in New Jersey with the Unified Power Ranking, as far as wins and losses if we win one of these next three games we should be in. As far as having success, it is just getting better everyday. Every time we step on the practice field we can get better everyday.

Q: What does your team have to do to get a bounce back win after the game vs Salem?

A: Salem was a tough game. We just need to get better.

Q; What is the message to defense for Saturday afternoon’s game vs Gateway?

A: If you got 6 or 7 plays of football in your head, the defense is going to play great. So the pursuit is great angles at every play.

Salem

SALEM–  It was not a good game for the Glassboro Bulldogs as they suffer their first loss of the season. The Salem Rams crush the Bulldogs 44-0 continuing their win steak by extending it to four. Also this was the Ram’s fourth game scoring 40 plus points.

The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 3-0 start, off their bye week they could not stop Salem. The Bulldogs defense averaged 16 points before their game against Salem. The Bulldogs allowed 23 points at half time then nearly the same result happen in the second half.

Everything seem to go wrong for Glassboro as they were shut out for the first time since September of last year. For the first time this year The Bulldogs’ offense could not generate more yards than their opponent. Only five passing yards and a total of 58 yards opposed to Salem’s 353 yards.

The Bulldogs look to bounce back as they go back on the road to face the Audubon Green Waves. The Green Waves are also coming off a brutal outing against Gateway. The team is 1-4 as the Bulldogs look to take advantage and go 4-1. The game takes place on Saturday, October 13 at 11 am.
